The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions across the globe in commemoration of cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.
The Dubai Terry Fox Run (DTFR) is organized by a volunteer committee under patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum; Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation; Emirates Group and Dubai World.
DTFR operates with a zero budget. No volunteers are paid, all resources are donated by corporate and other participants to ensure all funds raised go towards cancer research projects in the UAE.
There is no minimum entrance fee. You can donate whatever you wish towards cancer research in the UAE.
DTFR is supported by the Dubai Sports council, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police and various other government organizations.
The run is the single largest single-day cancer fundraiser in the world and the Dubai Terry Fox Run is now in its 15th year, making it one of the first to be established and one of the best supported anywhere in the world.
It is one of the UAE's foremost charity fundraising events which has raised more than 7 million dirhams for cancer research since it started.
Over 8,000 participants are expected to the 2013 run
The run itself is informal and the distance is a matter of personal preference. Furthest is approx 8 kilometers; participation is considered to be more important than completing the set distance …it is NOT a race!
You don't have to run – you can walk, bicycle or roller blade. There are no limitations
All participants are treated equally, if you donate AED 10 or AED 1M, you are equally important to the DTFR
There is lots of other entertainment to make this a fun morning out – all for a very good cause!
Total Number of research projects completed (from 1998 – Present) – 26 Research Projects
There are currently 7 research projects ongoing.
